A sage native to southern California and neighboring Baja California west of the desert, Salvia apiana Salvia apiana , an important nectar source for sage honey and used by the local Indians for its edible seeds, medicinally, and for burning to provide smoke for ritual purification in ceremonies. It is also grown as a drought-tolerant small shrub in local gardens.
