Transfer Agent Definition
noun
A bank or trust company charged with keeping a record of the shareholders of a corporation and issuing and canceling stock certificates as shares are bought and sold.
Webster's New World
An individual or business that keeps a record of all shareholders in a corporation by name, address, and number of shares owned. Not every stock transaction results in a transfer, because a considerable share of most issues is held in the street name in order to support margin or for the owner’s convenience.
