From Hungarian Tisza. Known in Latin as Pathissus, perhaps from Thracian-Dacian *patis (“water"); compare Sanskrit पाथस् (pāthas, “water"). The word may have been analyzed by the Slavic tribes as composed of Proto-Slavic *po (“by, at") + *tisÑŠ (“yew") (compare Russian тис (tis)).
