The sheathing or stipulary portion is frequently wanting.
The laminar portion of a leaf is occasionally articulated with the petiole, as in the orange, and a joint at times exists between the vaginal or stipulary portion and the petiole.
In Smilax, there are two stipulary tendrils.
In some Rosaceous plants an epicalyx is present, due to the formation of stipulary structures by the sepals.
In these cases the base may give off lateral stipulary processes, as in Allium and Alyssum calycinum.
