It lies in the densely populated district in the north-east of the county, between Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne, and is served by the London & North Western and Great Central railways.
The more important of the suburbs lie towards the east, where the promontory joins the main plateau, of which it forms the north-western extremity.
It has stations on the London & North-Western and the Lancashire & Yorkshire railways, with running powers for the Midland railway.
Almost immediately after the adoption of the ordinance a mass meeting at Clarksburg recommended that each county in north-western Virginia send delegates to a convention to meet in Wheeling on the 13th of May 1861.
The river Awe, issuing from the north-western horn of the loch, affords excellent trout and salmon fishing.
