Mononuclear Phagocyte System Definition

The diffuse system in humans and other vertebrates consisting of cells, chiefly monocytes and macrophages, that clear the body of pathogens and dead cells by phagocytosis and perform other immune functions. This system was formerly known as the “reticuloendothelial system” and included additional cell types.
