From Mongolian term used in a system of classification devised by British physician John Langdon Haydon Down (1828–1896) in which different types of intellectual disability were associated with non-Caucasian racial categories (the epicanthic folds typical of persons with Down syndrome leading him to associate them with Central and East Asian populations)
