• It is characterized by the production of small (microcytic) RBCs.

• Anemia resulting from a deficiency of iron is also called microcytic anemia.

• The MCHC is low in microcytic, hypochromic anemias such as iron deficiency, but is usually normal in macrocytic anemias.
