Quinine still remains the one specific. In serious cases it should not be given in solid form, but in solution by the stomach, rectum, or - better - hypodermically (Manson).
Brucine is a local anaesthetic. Strychnine enters the blood as such, being freely absorbed from mucous surfaces or when given hypodermically.
It has been used for the cure of lupus and of keloid, in which case it is administered hypodermically.
Substitutes may therefore be divided into those administered orally and those administered hypodermically.
Morphine may be given hypodermically to mitigate the pain.
