Here was what seems to have been the basement of a very large hall or " Megaron," approached directly from the central court, and near this were found further reliefs, fresco representations of scenes of the bull-ring with female as well as male toreadors, and remains of a magnificent gaming-board of gold-plated ivory with intarsia work of crystal plaques set on silver plates and blue enamel (cyanus).
There are also the bull-ring, capable of accommodating 8000 spectators, the pelota court (el Trinquete) and several parks or gardens.
Of the theatres, which until the end of the Spanish period had to compete with the bull-ring and the cockpit, the most important is the Tacon (now "Nacional") erected in 1838.
Albacete comprises the picturesque old upper town and the new or lower town, with lawcourts, schools, barracks, hospitals, a council-hall, a bull-ring and other modern buildings, mostly erected after the city became a provincial capital in 1833.
A free library was founded in 1905, and a statue of Queen Victoria unveiled in the Bull Ring at the same time.
